Space qualified fiber optic solutions

Diamond has been supplying the renowned AVIM® connector for avionic, military, and ruggedized applications for more than 20 years. The European Space Agency (ESA) released the ESCC specifications (2263420, 3420) for fiber optic connectors, including the detail specification of the Mini AVIM® (3420/001) allowing customers to configure various assemblies. Some assemblies variants, defined in the ESCC certificate 355, have been qualified and figure in the ESCC QPL. Diamond is well versed in the requirements and sourcing procedures for space-qualified components and is committed to providing continued support for these and related products. The AVIM® Family was created around the AVIM® and the Mini AVIM® and completed with the Midi AVIM® and Micro AVIM® to respond to the demand for high performance optical connectors in a growing aerospace market with new applications. The AVIM® product family will expand, especially in the line of multi-channel assemblies.

Ruggedized fiber optic connectors

The modular DM4 multipurpose insert allows for configuration of each termini and can be assembled to meet your specifications. The DM4 Insert incorporates four optical or electrical termini that are ideal for hybrid electrical / optical applications. The Compact DM4 can be used as a standalone product or as an insert in our Harsh Environment connectors. The DM4 insert is the core of the existing HE-2000®, MIL-38999 DM4 and MIL-83526 DM4 Diamond connectors. Furthermore, the design of the DM4 OEM insert is constructed to fit into a variety of different connector housings. The high-precision fiber optic ferrule assembly provides low optical losses, as well as reliable and repeatable performance over a long period of time.

Reliable and lightweight fiber optic solutions

Diamond high-performance, lightweight and reliable products are designed for ease of installation and deployment in aircrafts. These include compact and robust connectors with the highest optical performance for the most demanding sensing and communication devices as well as unique and practical field repair kits that can be used in the most severe conditions. History In response to a customer request in 1992, Diamond was tasked with developing a fiber optic connector based on the existing DIN connector, but with an integrated protective cap, push-pull mechanism and mechanical coding, as well as, constructed of high quality plastic. A team of engineers set to work and within just a few months designed and developed the connector that is now known as the E-2000®. Initially, the connector was called Europa 2000, a name that was shortened to "E-2000" for simplicity's sake and in response to demand from all over the world. Diamond then patented the connector and had its name protected. The difference is in the details Instead of the widely used Monoblock ferrules, Diamond exclusively uses ceramic ferrules with titanium inserts, a composite ferrule, for its connectors. Together with Diamond’s patented Active Core Alignment (ACA) process, which perfectly centers the fiber core on the axis of the ferrule, the insertion loss values are reduced to a minimum. By controlling the tolerances of fiber core eccentricity and angular misalignment, Diamond is able to determine an optical performance class with guaranteed attenuation values within the 0.1db class and also applies to any randomly combined connectors of this quality class. Thanks to its characteristics, the E-2000® connector already excelled in the nineties with unprecedented values and was thus the perfect answer to the increasing demand for precision and first-class transmission values. A new star is born A number of other features contributed to the E-2000® suddenly becoming world-famous and still being one of the most successful connectors in fiber optic technology. Among other attributes, Diamond also guarantees the traceability of all its connectors. In addition, the compatibility of the E-2000® connectors has been guaranteed over the years, i.e. the connectors are one hundred percent interchangeable. Diamond is also one of the few manufacturers of reference cables. Fiber optic reference connectors are manufactured with the lowest tolerances and are used for attenuation measurement; they are considered a component of the measuring equipment because they make a significant contribution to decreasing measurement uncertainties. Same but different The low insertion loss values, which can be controlled and constantly guaranteed thanks to the Active-Core-Alignment (ACA) process, are often copied, but unrivalled. In addition, all Diamond connectors are manufactured and inspected in Switzerland using clearly defined processes and only high-quality materials. The originality of the Diamond E-2000® connector can be easily determined by looking at the ferrule. If a silvery glossy insert can be seen in the middle of the surface of the ferrule, you can be sure that it is an original connector from Diamond. Only the E-2000® from Diamond is available as an original.

Expanded Beam Technology

In a lensed fiber optical connection, the alignment accuracy between the fiber, the lens and their corresponding counterpart must be kept very tight in order to attain proper insertion losses. Diamond has developed an ultra-low tolerance optical sub-assembly with a micro lens and a ferrule embedded in a high precision guide ceramic sleeve. This is accomplished through ultra-precise machining of ceramics and opto-mechanical parts, along with a vertically integrated manufacturing process, from the raw materials to the finished product, and a consequent quality system. The result is a high performance, exceedingly reliable lensed-ferrule assembly offering compact size and highly repeatable low insertion loss. A Diamond lensed-ferrule assembly can fit standard connector bodies as well as many different connectivity solutions, thanks to its modular conception, and can be pondered as a substitute of physical contact (PC) ferrules, when mating-cycles, dust insensitivity, reliability and low losses matter.

Polarization Maintaining (PM) - High Extinction Ratio fiber interfaces

DIAMOND has more than 25 years’ experience in terminating Polarization Maintaining (PM) or/and Polarizing (PZ) fibers of various types (Panda, Bow Tie, PCF, elliptic core, and more). Our expertise in this technology is largely due to our metrology capability and direct involvement with the measurement standards. DIAMOND’s unique Active Core Alignment (ACA) process results in extremely low Insertion Loss (IL), even on small core fibers. In addition, we independently orient the core to a connector key using state-of-the-art a double cross polarizer, low coherence measurement method. Please consult our white paper for more information on this measurement method. Two interfaces are available, PM+ on homologated configurations with higher PER and PM on a wider range of configuration, including our multi-channel DM4 based connectors. Features and benefits - Proprietary Active Core Alignment (ACA) à Ultra low insertion loss (IL) and high Return Loss (RL) - Active Polarization Orientation (APO) - High Polarization Extinction Ration (ER or PER) - Ultra low tolerance keying mechanisms - Optimized ultra-polish techniques - 100% interferometry front face inspection
